A short Kōrero with Ruth Ungerer

Tell us a small bit about your background.

I grew up on a sheep farm in Otahuti, and always had an affinity for animals. I graduated as a Veterinarian in 2007 and returned home to Southland working at our Gore VetSouth clinic, initially as a mixed vet, and then was drawn towards a Small animal focus. I worked as a Veterinarian for VetSouth for nine years before deciding to focus on my other passions; CrossFit and Olympic Weightlifting; both as a gym owner and as a NZ representative athlete. I sold my CrossFit gym in 2018, and in 2019 returned to VetSouth in a Learning and Development role, and then this year joined the Invercargill team as the Practice Manager. It's a long curly story!

What is your new role at VetSouth and what does it consist of?

As the Practice Manager, my job is to keep the clinic running smoothly and ensuring we continue to offer a great service to our clients. It's a great job as I work with an amazing team that love what they do.

What does a perfect weekend look like for you?

Lots of exercise, dog walks at Queens Park and coffee dates with my husband.

As we focus on mental health this month, what do you do to look after your mental health?

I work to keep a good routine throughout the week. For me, this means ensuring I get plenty of good sleep and daily exercise. Even when short on time just putting together a quick workout at home helps me feel good.

A quote that motivates you.

This is one that has stuck with me for many years! "If you always do what you've always done, you will always get what you have always got." - I believe this is a Henry Ford quote. To me, this helps me remember you need to step outside of your comfort zone to realise your potential.
