VetSouth mixed animal vet James Benstead shares why working with a range of animals is so beneficial.

Hey, I’m James, a mixed animal vet based in Winton, with the odd few days in the Invercargill clinic.

I’m originally from Perth, Western Australia, but have been out here in sunny Southland for the last year. Although I’m still getting used to the cold, I’ve really enjoyed both working and experiencing everything the region has to offer over the last 12 months.

A diverse workload

One of the best things about working as a vet down here is the diverse workload. I could be in-clinic with smallies one day, then out in the field with sheep or cows the next!

It's also really beneficial to have different types of work. Treating sick animals is really satisfying and enjoyable, but it's also nice to break it up with some more routine work, such as visiting clients on farm for the annual Ram Run.

The other great aspect of this job is the people I have met. The VetSouth team is really supportive and fun, which seems to be reflected with the clients and farmers I have met.

Outside of work

Outside of being a vet, I’ve enjoyed exploring different parts of the south. Dappling in hiking, skiing and surfing, along with other things, has been really fun!
